With Missouri medical marijuana dispensaries starting to open up, many patients are beginning to think about applying for their card. Trying to find the right information can be difficult, so we here at SouthWest MOgrown put together this little guide to help you navigate this new industry. It really is a simple process and can be done in as little as three steps:
- Find out if you have a qualifying condition
- Obtain an authorized Doctor’s recommendation
- Apply with the state
Missouri MMJ Qualifying Conditions
The list of qualifying conditions in Missouri is pretty extensive. You can find the complete list here. Many people may believe that MMJ is only for those with terminal illnesses, but there are a variety of conditions that are covered. It is common for people with anxiety or depression, or even mild chronic pain to be approved. Once you are sure you have a qualifying condition it’s time for step two.
How to Find an Authorized Doctor
First and foremost, it can not be stressed enough how important it is to vet any doctor that isn’t your primary physician. More than 600 patients have had to recertify after being scammed by fake doctors. If the deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Depending on who your primary doctor is, it may be as easy as speaking with them. Unfortunately, a lot of physicians work for federally funded hospital groups that won’t allow them to offer recommendations.
Thankfully, telemedicine has made it easier than ever to obtain your medical marijuana card in Missouri. There are a number of reputable sites out there, but our recommendation is Nugg MD. Sign up was quick and painless. Just answer a few questions, and hang out in the virtual waiting room until a doctor is available. The doctors are professional and ready to answer any questions you might have. They do an excellent job explaining potential benefits and hazards. This normally costs $99 but you can knock $20 for a limited time off with discount code: SWMOG20
Apply for your Missouri Medical Card
Once you have your recommendation head over to the Missouri DHSS page to begin your application. You will need proof of residency which can be your driver’s license or state ID, a utility bill, or proof of ownership of property. There are two licenses you can apply for. A regular patient card is $25 and a cultivator’s license is $100 plus the patient card. A Missouri MMJ card will allow you access to dispensaries and to purchase up to 4 ounces in 30 days.
The cultivation license allows you to grow up to 18 total plants. Six in each stage of development: seedling/clone, vegetation, flowering. For an additional $125/patient, you may apply to become a caregiver. This allows for an additional 18 plants per patient. When you apply they will ask you where your grow will be. You MUST answer this question thoroughly. What room/where you will grow, who will have access (only you and your patients), how secure the room is. If you are not thorough, you will be given an opportunity to edit your submission. It’s best to do it right the first time so you don’t have to wait longer.
Waiting For Your MMJ Card
According to Reddit, the turnaround time is around three to four weeks. The state has 30 days from the time you submit to make a decision. If they have not, your application becomes your MMJ card until you are approved. This wait is definitely a bummer but you can take advantage and study up on how to grow.
